If authentic Neapolitan food is what you're looking for, look no further than Assunta's
in Slidell. Assunta's has been a favorite since 1988 when Assunta Vitagliano Young herself, a
native of Naples, Italy, was the chef. In 1992 she became the owner, and in 2002, she passed
the tradition on to her daughter, Ann Sergi.
We sat down to chat with Assunta and Ann over an absolutely delicious Italian dinner of
lasagna and chicken parmesan. The atmosphere at Assunta's is as inviting as it gets, you
really feel like you're amongst friends there. Ann, Assunta and the staff make sure that you
feel welcome and comfortable, it's the reason why people say Assunta's has the best staff on the
Northshore and that Ann can truly call her customers friends, and vice versa.
The food is scrumptious. Popular dishes include Osso Buco and Frutti di Mare
(fruit of the sea), which is a feast featuring every seafood Assunta's carries. There's also
the Mixed Grill, which includes a lamb chop topped with pesto sauce, a portion of ribeye topped with
pizzaiola sauce, and a portion of pork loin topped with onions, mushrooms, and artichoke hearts in a
white wine sauce. How's that for a taste bud tempter? Dieters need not worry, because
Assunta's is happy to accommodate any diet. And don't forget, Assunta's serves
"Americanized" entrees also.
The
atmosphere of the restaurant only adds to a delightful dining experience. The charming
building nestled amongst Live Oaks beckons you in, and the shining wood floors beautiful bar and
warm, friendly service keeps you there. You may not ever want to leave! Ann told us that
over the years she and Assunta have developed wonderful friendships with their regulars. The
sincere kindness of Ann and the staff allows people to feel comfortable even if they're dining solo,
so there's absolutely NO excuse to stay home!
Assunta's serves dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 5:00 pm.m till 10:00 p.m, and
Sunday from 4:00 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. Assunta's is available for small in-house weddings,
rehearsal parties, or just to sit at the new bar, designed by Ann herself, and have a delicious
meal.
